Divorce Attorneys Know the Issues of Dissolution of Marriage

Vancouver, Washington family lawyers speak of divorce with their clients even though in Washington State divorce is formally called “dissolution of marriage.”

To dissolve a marriage, documents must be filed in the county where either you or your spouse lives. A divorce attorney can help expedite this process.

The minimum waiting period for a divorce in Washington is ninety days before the court will finalize a divorce. The ninety days do not start until the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage is filed and then served on the non-filing spouse. If both spouses sign the Petition, then the clock on the ninety days starts running.

If you and your spouse agree on all aspects of the divorce then you can qualify for an uncontested divorce.

This seldom happens. Sometimes one of the parties wants to expedite the process so he or she is willing to make concessions that will be detrimental in years to come. Consulting with a divorce attorney is always wise before making any major decisions.

The most common issues that need to be addressed and resolved in a divorce are:

  • Division of property and debts
  • Maintenance/Alimony
  • Child support
  • Residential schedule/parenting plan for dependent children
