Family separation is a transition that affects all members of a family. Sometimes, it can be so emotionally taxing, especially when there is a lack of closure. All members of the family undergo significant changes when the divorce occurs. This is where the “Two Home Family Ritual” comes into play. By participating in a divorce or separation ritual that marks the transition from being a union to being single.
The Two Home Family Ritual may be used by individuals or by parents and their families, depending on the situation. The main idea behind this ceremony is that it will symbolize the start of a brand new family configuration. It can gently facilitate closure of the romantic relationship and the restructuring of a new one. This helps clear the way for creating a new two household family.
Materials needed for this ritual are; one large free standing candle, two smaller candles and a match or lighter. If you plan to have children present, you can have another large candel.
Step one: Light the large candle, which represents your marriage. Next you will say something positive about the day you were married. This candle represents your life as husband and wife.
Step two: Each person then takes their small candle and lights it with the large candle. This will represent taking your individual self back, no longer united.
Step three: One of you will state the following: “We were divorced on September 27, 2014. We are no longer Mr. and Mrs. ________ a married couple. We are now Kathy ______ and Tom ________.”
Step four: The large wedding candle should then be extinguished revealing the mutual acceptance of the relationship ending. Make sure to keep your individual candles lit until the ceremony is over.
