The key to a financially successful divorce can be found in one word—“Preparation.”
Here are some suggestions which any qualified family attorney will give you.
- Build your personal credit. Establish credit in your own name. Set up credit card, savings and checking accounts in your name and start setting aside cash reserves.
-
Establish a new and private mail box. This box should be a confidential, personal email to which your spouse will not have access. You can also have your mail sent to a trusted relative or friend’s address. This way you can communicate sensitive information with your lawyer, divorce planner, credit agencies and other entities.
- Copy documents that are relevant to your financial situation. You don’t want to have them mysteriously disappear. You are entitled to copies of all asset and liability statements including investments, retirement plans, mortgage, auto loans, student loans and credit cards. You can also have duplicate real estate deeds, insurance policies, tax returns, pre-marital agreements, promissory notes, wills, money market accounts and check registers.
- Create an inventory of all your valuables. This would include: art, jewelry, collectibles, furnishings, furs and vehicles. It is a good idea to take photographs of everything.
