Just about any lawyer, whether in Vancouver WA, or another part of the nation, will tell you couples filing for divorce increases dramatically in January. This increase has earned January the nickname of “divorce month.”
A new study done by the University of Washington, reveals March and August as the top months for couples filing for divorce, not January.
Divorce filings for January are quite low. Obviously, the month with the fewest number of divorce filings is December.
The acute increase between January and December is probably why many assumed January was “divorce month.”
Even if the first month has lost its title, filing for divorce in January does present a challenge for parents. That challenge is your kids are smack dab in the middle of their school year.
If you’re planning on filing for divorce in January consider the following…
- Try not to disturb your child’s school schedule.
- If one parent must move, perhaps they can move within the same school district. That way your child can ride the bus home to either residence.
- Experts recommend you put your child’s physical, emotional, and psychological needs first.
- Consider not excluding your child’s other parent from school-based activities.
- Contemplate not giving your child more responsibility then they can handle.
