Christmas isn’t always cheerful during a divorce. This season can bring on a lot of stress. How do you keep your sanity and avoid making stress-induced mistakes?
- Don’t feel like you have to do everything on the traditional to-do list. Be flexible. You might have to buy your sugar cookies this year. You might not have all the lights on the outside of the house.
- Don’t compare this year to last year. Especially don’t compare your life to the Hallmark movies. Even the best families in the world don’t have happy endings like those.
- If a traditional activity doesn’t make you happy this year, skip it. If seeing holiday movies about happy families makes you feel sad, don’t watch them. If all those brag letters from friends are annoying, don’t open them. If you can’t provide fudge for the office party, don’t worry. No one needs those calories anyway.
- Remember your soon-to-be ex is going through a divorce, too. Give him or her a break.
- Try to stay kind to your future ex’s family. Insulting them will not help anything. If appropriate, have your children make tokens for the in-laws.
