Divorce at Christmas Can Be Difficult, but Not Impossible

During a divorce, children often feel a lack of control. They feel that they have no voice in what happens to the family. During the holidays and on other specials occasions, you can relieve some of the stress for them by giving them some voice over where they spend their time.

Skiing with friends might be important for your child over the holidays. Be flexible.

This is especially important to older children, who might be shuttled off to the non-custodial parent right during a holiday party scheduled with their friends.

Communication with the child is important. Parents also need to be flexible. If the teen has an opportunity to go skiing this may be a good activity, but may require a change of schedule between the parents. Put the child’s needs first. This does not mean that an angry teenager gets to make all the decisions, but her or she should have a voice in the scheduling of their life.

The holidays aren’t a time to get even with your ex. The holidays are about finding joy and about learning to be together even if it is just for a moment.
