Regardless of your faith the stages of mourning and grief are fairly universal. Vancouver, WA family divorce attorneys are familiar with these stages because we see them on a regular basis.
When a death occurs, we as a society recognize those close to the deceased need time to go through the normal grieving process.
Though everyone doesn’t go through the stages in the same way or the same order, these are associated with the grieving process:
- Denial and Isolation. The pain and overwhelming emotions often cause a defense mechanism that buffers the immediate shock.
- Anger. As the denial leaves, reality re-emerges. Rather than feel emotional we often feel anger.
- Bargaining. In this stage there is an understanding of our helplessness and a need to regain control.
- Depression. This is often associated with sadness and negative outlooks.
- Acceptance. This stage may take a long time and may come and go.
The same grieving process often occurs during a divorce. This is true even if you wanted the divorce. Society and those around us are not always ready to let us go through these stages like they would had there been a death.
If you are going through a divorce, we at Lambert Law, a Vancouver, WA divorce attorneys office, know you need time to restructure your life. We are here to help you do just that.
