A Family Attorney in Vancouver WA Explains Toddler Development

If you are the parent of a toddler, you likely already know that this stage is the beginning of greater independence, defiance, and self-awareness in your child’s life. Between 12 and 36 months, children will develop a desire to explore their surroundings.

It’s common to witness toddlers mimicking and imitating the behavior of others, especially older children and adults. They will also start to master new skills and develop a vast vocabulary.

Here are a few things children will experience as they move from ages 1 to 3:

12 to 18 months– Children of this age become increasingly self-aware. They are just learning how to manage their feelings and the process can frequently lead to tantrums. Children in this age group are impulsive.  Usually around 18 months many toddlers will go through separation anxiety. This can cause your toddler to be unusually clingy or timid.

19 to 24 months: Children in this age group are extremely observant of the emotional reactions of others. Their observations helps them to set limits, as they will notice the cues on their parent’s face. Their social interests will vary widely at this age.

25 to 30 months– The imagination of children in this age group will drastically increase over time. Sometimes the make believe play involves playing store or pretending to be an animal, but sometimes it may lead to a fear of monsters and other imaginary dangers.

Toddlers in this age group will continue to increase their understanding or language and emotions. They may also begin to understand how to label feelings and recognize them within themselves.

30 to 36 months– During this age, toddlers may create imaginary friends. Children may also begin to form deep relationships with people other than their parents. Social interaction is incredibly important during this stage, because your toddler is learning how to be a part of relationships.

All toddlers are different, and it is important to realize that they will experience stages on their own pace. Click here to read more about toddler development.
